With the NX, our design team has created the most distinctive Lexus crossover yet. And the most athletic.
As Nobuyuki Tomatsu, leader of the exterior design team explains “The design concept for our new NX crossover started as just four words: 1.Premium 2. Urban 3. Sports 4. Gear. As Lexus’ most compact SUV, I wanted to create an agile feeling like that of a sports car, but also befitting its urban use. An original and aggressive form was a must. The NX will attract a new generation of owners, it’s a car that will spark passion with all.”
From the start, Mr. Tomatsu imagined a diamond shaped cabin space with wheels located at the four facets and all non-essentials stripped away, lean like a lightweight boxer. “I reduced body volume on the four corners where there are no occupants, leaving just the cabin where they sit. Extra space was made for the rear seat occupants’ heads, creating a peak after which the roof slopes down abruptly to create a tight silhouette.”
Edgy new colours - like sonic silver or ultrasonic blue - give the NX crossover the catwalk looks it deserves.
Bold new colours played a vital role in creating the striking new NX crossover. As Ms. Momoko Okamoto (who also worked on our LFA supercar) was responsible for NX interior and exterior colour design, explains: “We aimed for edgy, cool colours - and textures that compliment urban scenes, while also emphasising the aggressiveness of this new crossover.”
Sonic Silver, for instance, makes the NX gleam like no other crossover, whatever the weather. It contains two types of flakes: the first sparkle better under sunlight, the second shimmer brighter under clouds. After hand-sanding, each car is checked by a Takumi master craftsperson to ensure an immaculate finish.
For a safer and more relaxing drive the new NX features a larger colour head-up display.
Inspired by the head-up displays on the latest supersonic fighter jets, the new Lexus colour Head-Up Display employs breakthrough digital and optical technology. The use of colour improves the appearance and visibility of the display – and enables, for example, warning indicators to be displayed in red to promote caution.
The new larger display also allows a broader range of data to be displayed simultaneously. This reduces the need to search for information you wish to see, and frequently used information is always shown in the same place to lessen distraction while driving.
We took several measures to avoid information overload from the data displayed in the line of sight. These included extensive field trials and interviews with numerous drivers to ascertain the key details they wished to have displayed. This has ensured that there is no extraneous information shown that might distract you from the road ahead.
For the NX crossover we developed a highly intuitive new Touch Pad interface, and clever wireless phone charger.
Smartphone users will love the NX’s intuitive new Touch Pad. Familiar ‘flick and pinch’ operations mean you’ll quickly learn how to use it without studying complex instruction manuals.
In addition to great usability, the new Touch Pad was engineered using extensive customer input. For instance, half way through the project we lowered the pressure required to operate the keys. And, for a long and active life, our design team developed a new polymer screen that is resistant to hand cream, makeup, soft drinks and perspiration. Unlike portable devices, vehicle-mounted devices cannot be removed from their position and are prone to overheating on very warm days. The new Touch Pad will operate faultlessly up to an unbelievable 85°C.
Finally, in addition to Touch Pad, the NX features innovative technologies like a wireless charger. This tops up your mobile’s battery, simply by placing it in the console tray. With not a wire in sight!
